University of Wisconsin - Madison Classics Graduate Colloquium - 23-24/09/2015, Madison, WI (USA)
Eureka! Archimedes had his best ideas while sitting in the tub, surrounded by the art and architecture of a Sicilian bathhouse. In his exile poetry, Ovid begs for release from the threat of neighboring tribes and complains that he is unable to produce quality writing while so far from home, fearing for his life and his reputation. The Israelites escaped slavery under the Egyptian Pharaoh and journeyed to the Chosen Land, but they were unable to settle there until they had wandered and suffered in an inhospitable environment for forty years. From the close and familiar to the distant and incomprehensible, the world around us structures our creative endeavors and cultural institutions.
