PROGRAMA/PROGRAM/PROGRAMMA:
Although the remains of dramatic poetry from the Hellenistic period are scanty, the notion of ‘performance’ is present in many Hellenistic poems. In this workshop the speakers address several questions related to this idea of
performance. Starting with two papers which focus on the general background of
‘travel and performance’ in the Hellenistic world and the increasing presence of
women’s voices, the workshop then moves on to the themes of (1) the reception of
the old dramatic genres (tragedy and comedy), (2) the use of elements of
performance as a means of innovation in ritual poetry, (3) the new genres of
scenes from daily life presented as brief dramatic scenes suggestive of
performance, and (4) the intricate mixture of written epic at play with notions
of performance. Thus a number of aspects of performance in Hellenistic poetry
are highlighted. In a final discussion we will address more general questions
concerning the workshop’s theme.
Papers of earlier workshops are published in the series Hellenistica Groningana:
