CALL. 15.08.2015: Synoikismos Seminar 2: “Complexity theory” and socio-ecological systems - (Belgium
The concept of social-ecological systems (SES) has long been integrated in such disciplines as biology, ecology, spatial planning, geography, and governance studies, and has consequently contributed greatly towards our understanding of the organization of human communities, and the reciprocal relationship between these communities and the ecological systems in whichthey are embedded. SES consist of coupled human-environment systems and are generally studied through an internally coherent bio- and geo-physical unit and associated social actors and institutions. SES are complex and adaptive systems (CAS) characterized by an increased internal connectivity and interactivity. Recently, the acknowledgment of the immense potential of CAS-research for historical case-studies has led to the application of the conceptof SES on archaeological data of past communities as well. Early adopters have clearly demonstrated the enormous possibilities of such a framework for improving our understanding of the dynamics of community organization and development in the past. It is believed further integration of 'complexity approaches' within archaeological and historical research can provide a strong impetus to continue and improve the already strong existing current of interdisciplinary research in the field of archaeology. Given the many still unexplored potential applications of these types of research perspectives, contributions froman as wide as possible variety of approaches within the complexity theory framework are encouraged.

CALL:
For the fourth edition of the Synoikismos doctoral seminar, which focusses on Greco-Roman andEastern Antiquities, all doctoral students from Belgian and foreign Universities are offered the opportunity to present their state of research during one of the three workshops, dedicated to the following topics:
1. Books and libraries in Antiquity (27 October, 2015)
2. “Complexity theory” and socio-ecological systems (February 2016)
3. Greek religion in all its aspects (philology, archaeology, epigraphy and intellectual history) (20 April, 2016)
Every paper (in English, French or Dutch) should connect with one of these three topics, takes about 40 minutes and is followed by a 20 minutes discussion. All fields of research which are somehow related to the ancient world are welcome: literature, linguistics, history, archaeology, art history, epigraphy, papyrology, numismatics, etc. Each seminar will be introduced, guided and supervised by one or more established experts of these research topics : 1.Rosa Otranto, Università di Bari; 2.Jeroen Poblome, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven; 3.Vinciane Pirenne, Université de Liège.
Synoikismos presents its seminars as a unique opportunity to literally get the participants, an audience and experts around the table for a constructive exchanging of feedback. By means of tips and ideas progress in research and its presentation are fostered. With its friendly and scientific oriented format, Synoikismos, by and for young researchers, also hopes to facilitate contacts among colleagues within related fields and offer starting academics a platform to present their research in all confidence. Of course, no final conclusions are expected from the presented papers.
Every PhD student (in the phase of beginning or finishing his/her dissertation) who is interested is kindly invited to submit a summary of ten lines and a short CV to Synoikismos (via seminar.synoikismos@gmail.com), no later than Augustus 15, 2015.
