CALL:

IKUWA—Internationaler Kongreß für Unterwasserarchäologie—founded in 1999 in Rügen, Germany, is a global network of cooperating bodies that organizes conferences focused on underwater archaeology to highlight the importance of the underwater cultural heritage. IKUWA supports the international regulatory framework for its protection, preservation and interpretation.

IKUWA6 will be the first time that an IKUWA conference is held outside Europe and in the southern hemisphere.

The year 2016 marks the 400th Anniversary of the first recorded European landing in Western Australia. Nailed to a wooden post, the inscribed pewter plate left behind by Dutch seafarer Dirk Hartog to commemorate his voyage and landfall in Shark Bay in 1616, is the earliest verified archaeological evidence of a European visit in Australia. It heralded the beginning of a series of explorations by English, Dutch and French navigators, many of whom called at Shark Bay and charted its waters.

IKUWA6 will celebrate this significant occasion, and explore the issues of shared heritage. It will support a board, internationally focused agenda—crossing cultural, geographic and political borders.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Western Australian Museum to share our heritage!
