CALL:

Department of Polish Medieval History and Economic History (Institute of History) Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin (Poland) cordially invites you to participate in the academic conference: An Undiscovered Woman - from Antiquity to Contemporary Times to be held in Lublin, September 22-23, 2016. The research on the place, meaning and manner of perceiving women who lived in the past has for quite a long time been within the sphere of historians’ interests, the expression of which is the increasing number of publication on that particular subject. However, so far the scholarly focus has been placed primarily on women from the privileged social strata and communities. Numerous discussions were therefore dedicated to the historical figures of queens, female representatives of aristocratic families or rich middle classes, who were then usually presented through the prism of their social roles or professions, typical for the given historical period and cultural circles. The purpose of this conference is to indicate and discuss women who were often marginalized in historical discourse and whose spheres of activities were overlooked, starting from women who lived in antiquity, all the way across centuriesuntil modern times. The conference aims at answering the question whether the absence of female representatives of specific classes and circles or ethnic, professional and social groups, etc. derived from the shortage of literary sources or rather from the lack of scholars’ interest in these women, regarding them as not particularly absorbing subject for their academic inquiries. Above all, it will be important to compare and contrast the results of works conducted by scholars from various part of Europe. The organisers express hope, however, that the conference will be not only a summary of the already conducted studies of historians, classicists, archaeologists and anthropologists, but will, first and foremost, allow for recognizing new analyses and scholarly prospects in the studies on women who so far have never been truly discovered by the aforementioned academic fields. The venue for the conference: The Institute of History at Maria Curie- Sklodowska University, pl. Marii Curie-Sklodowskiej 4a, 20-031 Lublin, Poland. Conference language: Polish or English. Conference fee is 200 PLN (50 Euro) and it includes: publication of conference articles, conference materials and food (midday meals and one formal dinner). The bank account on which the fee should be sent will be given at a later date. Conference schedule: March 31st, 2016 – final date for sending paper proposal together with an abstract (maximum 200 words, in English). Doctoral candidates and PhD students are additionally obliged to submit a letter written by their supervisor or PhD coordinator confirming the high quality of the paper.
