CALL:

The field of cognitive theory, also known as cognitive science, is an interdisciplinary area that examines the processes of the mind and draws from research in psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, linguistics, anthropology and cognitive archaeology. In recent years, cognitive approaches to the humanities have started to proliferate with work on language, literature, performance, ritual and religion, perception, and emotions. We are now starting to see scholars working on different aspects of Greek and Roman antiquity engage with the cognitive sciences in a variety of forms. This conference seeks to bring together several of them to explore this rich and stimulating new direction for classics. Participants are invited to submit two types of presentation: scholars are invited to submit abstracts for a 30-minute paper or presentation on their work explaining how they are applying any aspect of cognitive science to ancient material; graduate students, and scholars who have just begun to explore this area, are invited to submit a 15- minute paper or presentation. Abstracts (Please indicate 30 min or 15 min) should be submitted to Peter Meineck at pm57@nyu.edu no later than April 8th 2016.
