The Conference “The Baths and the Sea” aims at examining the reflections in the Mediterranean area of the great “thermal age” from the roman age up to the carolingian empire, with particular attention to the coastal landscapes. Intimately linked to the Roman culture, the Baths are one of the main results of the process of Romanization in the Mediterranean basin. During the Empire the Baths became one of the essential elements of the civil life, a natural complement to the well-being, multiplying both in the cities and in smaller settlements. In Late Antiquity their use is widespread at all levels of the society, and responds to the needs of the urban masses, as well as to those of the aristocratic élites. This first workshop is focused on the relationships between the Baths and the coastal areas, with particular attention to the northern part of the Tyrrhenian Sea. For the posters section, however, the geographical area identification will be completely free.
