The Classical Association of the Middle West and South was founded in 1905 as the first regional classical organization in the USA. It immediately began publication of The Classical Journal, which became only the second classical journal (excluding annuals) in the country. Twenty-two states belonged at the beginning; there are now thirty-two states and three Canadian provinces. The Association is much the largest of all regional groups; membership is open to anyone with classical interests, regardless of place of residence.
The 113th Annual Meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South will be held Wednesday-Saturday, April 5-8, 2017, in Kitchener, Ontario, at the Holiday Inn at the invitation of the University of Waterloo. Proposals for panels, workshops, individual papers and round-table discussions on any aspect of Graeco-Roman antiquity are now being accepted.

Especially welcome are submissions likely to be of broad interest, including those on pedagogy. Teachers and students at any level (K-12, college, or university) may submit proposals, but papers written by undergraduates will be evaluated separately and assigned to sessions designated for them.
All individual paper proposals must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2016. All submissions will be judged anonymously by the Program Committee, chaired by CAMWS President Alden Smith of Baylor University .
Papers delivered at CAMWS should present new ideas to the audience, not repeating work already presented in a similar venue. Members are welcome to present work delivered at the author's home institution, at a specialized conference, or at a meeting outside North America, especially if it is work-in-progress that would benefit from wider discussion. However, if an abstract has been accepted for a meeting of a regional or national classical organization in the United States or Canada, it must not be submitted for the CAMWS meeting, unless it has been substantially changed.
Authors of abstracts and organizers of panels/workshops are not to be identified by name anywhere in their proposals. The panel or workshop organizer will submit a description of the panel or workshop along with the abstracts of the panelists or workshop participants. All submissions must follow these Formatting Guidelines for CAMWS Submissions:
-Spacing: All abstracts must be double-spaced, including bibliographic entries.
-Font: Use 12-point Times New Roman font. Enter any non-Roman text using Unicode. Do not use special effects like bolding, small caps or all caps.
-Margins: Set a 1-inch margin on all four sides.
-Page Format: Do not use headers, footers, foot or endnotes, page numbering or tracking. Please zoom the document to 100% of its actual size.
-Title: Center the title at the top of the page. Do not use bold or underlining in your title. Do not put the title in quotation marks unless it is an actual quotation.
-Paragraphs: Indent all paragraphs, including the first, with a .5-inch tab. Do not skip lines between paragraphs.
-Length: The combined length of the abstract (or panel/workshop description) and its list of works cited must not exceed 800 words, including the title.
Bibliography: Citations are optional, but are recommended for scholarly (as opposed to pedagogical) abstracts. Use abbreviated (author-date) citations in the body of the abstract, and provide bibliographical information for each work cited in a list at the end of the abstract. Cite only enough to locate your argument within relevant scholarship (no more than ten items) and, do not list in the bibliography works not cited in the abstract. Do not skip lines between bibliography entries. Use indenting for all lines after the first for each entry.
-File Name: Do not put your name in the file name. Avoid use of spaces in the filename. Please do not use "CAMWS" in your filename.
Authors of abstracts and organizers or participants in panels/workshops are not to be identified by name anywhere in their proposals.
Submissions which do not follow these guidelines will be returned to the author for revision.
The maximum time for an individual paper is 15 minutes. Papers in organized panels with fewer than six participants may exceed this time limit, but no panel may last longer than 100 minutes. Workshops will typically last one hour. Requests for audio-visual equipment must be made at the time the abstract is submitted. CAMWS welcomes papers on material culture and reception; however, because LCD projectors are expensive to rent, please request them for textually-based papers only when necessary. Individuals must provide their own laptop computers and adapter/sound cables. CAMWS cannot provide internet access during presentations.
Please submit all proposals electronically at Individual Abstract Submission Form, Panel Submission Form, Workshop Proposal Form or Round Table Discussion Proposal Form. If, for some reason, electronic submission is not possible, please contact the CAMWS office at the address below.
All presenters and organizers are required to be members of CAMWS at the time they submit their abstracts. Membership dues may be paid at camws.org/membership/memberinfo.php by credit card ($3.00 processing fee) or by mailing a check along with a membership form to CAMWS, Department of Classics, Monmouth College, 700 E. The Program Committee will reach its decision about proposed panels and workshops by September 16, 2016 and about individual abstracts by November 14, 2016. Please be aware that submission of an abstract is a commitment to present the paper in person in Kitchener. Individuals whose papers have been accepted are expected to register for the CAMWS meeting by December 31, 2016 in order to guarantee a place on the program.
