The POLISH CENTRE OF MEDITERRANEAN ARCHAEOLOGY University of Warsaw and the PCMA AYNUNA PROJECT are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for a conference "The Arabian Red Sea Route" to be held at the University of Warsaw on Monday, 3 July 2017.
Much has already been written on the international trade of the Roman Empire with Arabia, India, the East African coast and the Far East. It can be said that the Roman Empire, the biggest political organism in Europe before the EU, was engaged for the first time in history in a globalization process.
However, research has been focused mostly on the Egyptian ports on the Red Sea and on the Gulf route. There is also a long tradition of study of the caravan frankincense road between South Arabia and the Levant. The new Saudi–Polish project at Aynuna in the northern Hijaz has made us reflect on the sea ports on the Arabian shore. It is a good time now to exchange ideas on the ancient trade in the region in order to integrate Northern Arabia and its harbours into the network.
The workshop will be organized by the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, complementarily with the Red Sea VIII Conference to be held at the University of Warsaw on 4–9 July 2017.
A registration fee of 25 EUR will be charged from all participants at the venue. We invite proposals for papers for the workshop. Presentations are planned for 30 minutes with time left at the end for discussion. The deadline for proposals is 30 April 2017. Please send your submissions to either m.gawlikowski@uw.edu.pl or karol.juchniewicz@gmail.com
