[SESSION] BANEA Annual Conference 2017: "Bridges in the Landscape. Reconciling quantitative and
From the introduction of Geographic Information System (GIS) into the archaeological toolbox, over 20 years ago, GIS practices have acquired a widespread disciplinary acceptance. Despite its extensive diffusion (and the parallel strong rejection by nonpositivist and phenomenological epistemologies), we are collectively far from the critical awareness of the challenges of a spatial GIS-based analysis to get at the socio-cultural dynamics of past societies. The reflexive approach to GIS practices has a long story of critique in geography ('Critique GIS') while the archaeological discourse apparently still remains trapped in the outmoded positivist/nonpositivist dichotomy. How can we reconcile the technical/scientific characteristics of spatial analysis and quantitative/positivist archaeology with the embodied practices and the counter-modernist epistemologies of qualitative/nonpositivist archaeology? Actually it is a false problem: a one-to-one relation only apparently links epistemology and method and there can be a nonpositivist use of quantitative/GIS-based spatial analysis and vice versa. The current process of polarization and boundary enforcement needs now to be replaced by 'alternative rationalizations' reconnecting spatial-analytical and social-cultural archaeologies. As geographers recently introduced the perspective of 'hybrid geographies', our intention is to suggest the development of practices of 'hybrid archaeologies'. These can be intended as analytical procedures aiming to cross the boundary between the use of geo-spatial and quantitative technologies (GIS, as well as statistics and computational methods) and the qualitative understanding of the lived experiences of individuals and communities in past societies. This session seeks to provide an occasion for a critical engagement and a theory-laden approach to GIS applications in archaeology, exploring how quantitative methodologies can operate in parallel and in synergy with qualitative ones.
