Nilüfer International Workshop Series I: Necropolis and Landscape: Implementations, Approaches and S

We are pleased to announce the organization of the “1st International Necropolis and Landscape Wokshop: Implementations, Approaches and Suggestions”, which will be held on 2-3 December in Gölyazı, Nilüfer (Apollonia ad Rhyndacum).

According to known sources, Apollonia ad Rhyndacm, located at the settlement of Gölyazı, was founded in the 2nd century BC as a colony of Miletus. According to mythological narrative the city was founded by a group of Apollo priests during an expedition headed by Apollo of Didyma. A considerable part of the ancient city is today located under the modern settlement of Gölyazı. Nevertheless as the city’s necropolis area was timely declared an archaeological site, it has been preserved in its proper condition until today. The preserved necropolis area probably extends from the walls delimiting the ancient city until the Bursa-İzmir highway. The part of the necropolis area located at a point dominating the island of Kız Ada, where the temple of Apollo is located, is among the important parts of the necropolis area, which have been preserved without having subdued extensive destruction.

In 2016, upon intensification of illegal excavations rescue excavations were initiated at the necropolis area under the leadership of the Archaeological Museum of Bursa. According to existing findings it is possible to see here various example of necropolis architecture including a large number of chamosorion graves. At the completion of the rescue excavations an open-air museum will be established, in which all examples of graves from Antiquity until today will be exhibited and burial traditions will be presented.

In the framework of the project it has been decided that a workshop is organized in order to determine the landscape architecture to be implemented. In this context it is aimed that the models which will be brought out in the light of the presented papers will be discussed.
