CALL:

The Executive Committee for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Society of Biblical Literature (MAR-SBL) cordially invites you to submit proposals for the 2017 MAR-SBL Meeting. The meeting will be held jointly with the American Academy of Religion (AAR) on Thursday March 16th and Friday the 17th. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in New Brunswick, NJ. The hotel is located in downtown New Brunswick, just a short distance from Rutgers University. It is also located just three blocks from the New Brunswick station on NJ Transit's Trenton Line, which also services Newark International Airport. Our meetings will be held in hotel's conference spaces. Registration will include meals on Thursday and Friday during conference hours, though details remain to be worked out. Lodging is not included in the registration cost. Rooms have been reserved at the Hyatt Regency at a discount for attendees, but attendees will have to book their own reservation. Other hotels are available in the area. A link to book the hotel rooms will be made available on the registration page when registration goes live. The conference will begin on Thursday morning and run through Friday afternoon, though the undergraduate session will take place on Wednesday night. Our plenary speaker (to be decided) will speak on Thursday night, with a reception to follow. The president of our region, Kim Paffenroth of Iona College, will give our presidential address on Friday. The final cost of the conference is anticipated to be comparable to previous conferences held in hotels, and it would be prudent to budget accordingly. Please consider offering a paper proposal in any area of biblical studies. Any SBL member may submit a proposal regardless of his or her region. This year, our region would like to begin fostering undergraduate work in biblical studies as a part of our conference. Therefore, we encourage SBL members who work closely with undergraduates to encourage their undergraduates to also submit proposals to the Undergraduate session, which will be held the night before the start of the conference. The section will also include a reception for undergraduates and an opportunity to meet graduate students and professors who can advise them on entering academia in the field of Religious Studies. These proposals will be submitted as part of the AAR call for papers, and details are given below. Our region now has a webpage that has been donated to us by a member of the AAR, and in conjunction with the AAR, this webpage is now being used as a primary means of publishing information about the regional meeting and regional business. It is designed to facilitate the cooperation between the AAR and the SBL in our region and to keep the officers of both groups on the same page (so to speak) with regard to what is happening. The webpage may be viewed at <http://www.mar-aarsbl.org/>. Finally, this is Nathan LaMontagne's final year as the regional coordinator for the Mid-Atlantic Region. The region is therefore in need of someone who is organized and capable of taking over the responsibilities of Regional Coordinator. For more information about the Regional Coordinator position and what responsibilities it entails, please email Nathan.lamontagne@gmail.com. To submit your name as a possible replacement, please email a brief biography and a CV to Kim Paffenroth, who will vet the candidates. A vote will take place at the business meeting during the conference.
