CALL:

The term cleaning refers to a conglomerate of practices. These are rooted in social norms, morals and organizational structures. Regarding the essential, inclusive multiplicity of the term, we may call it a soft concept. In this regard, aspects of materiality, social organisation, creation and conservation of value, devaluation as well as destruction come into play. Questions of evaluation combine with issues around the term cleaning. Subsequently, we understand cleaning in contrast to established terms, such as the idea of kinship in anthropology, as a term, which combines several elements and has not been established as a method or theoretical keyword in a discursive frame. Moreover, it is the aim of the workshop to question and to make different meanings of cleaning productive for positions in anthropology, archaeology and neighbouring disciplines. This may include: Ethnographies of cleaning practices Infrastructure research Research on urban gentrification Research on the body Comments on a ,clean' modern ideology Design Anthropology Research on recycling processes; reuse of resources and objects Handling findings and conclusions at excavations Restoration and conservation of objects and memorials Increase in value by upgrading to a higher level of knowledge The workshop will be divided into four panels around the topics places/contexts, bodies, objects and social practices. The objective of the workshop is to discuss and critically question the existing meanings of cleaning within diverse disciplines, subjects, regions and times. The format, which combines paper presentations with subsequent keyword-related discussions in small groups, intends to foster dynamic exchange of various thoughts and arguments. Rather process-oriented, this format invites a broad spectrum of results, in kind as in number. We do not intend to establish a new theoretical concept of cleaning as a paradigm in academic discourse. Instead, our aim is to test the term's potential with regard to moral and practice-related implications from an interdisciplinary perspective. Keynote speakers Ulrich Veit (Universität Leipzig, Germany) Olli Lagerspetz (Åbo Akademi University, Finland) Ann Olga Koloski-Ostrow (Brandeis University, Waltham/Massachusetts, USA) Astrid Lindenlauf (Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania, USA) Jeanine Dağyeli (Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin, Germany) Claudia Liebelt (Universität Bayreuth, Germany) The workshop, organised by members of the graduate school "Value and Equivalence", is based on research and ideas in anthropology and archaeology, but is explicitly welcoming relevant contributions from all related disciplines (sociology, art history, historical sciences, philosophy, architecture etc.). A separate call addresses artists, who may be supported with a given sum to fund the production of relevant work. We call for contributions from all relevant disciplines. Presenters will have a 20-minute timeslot. Abstracts should be maximum 300 words long. The travel expenses plus costs for accommodation and food during the workshop will be covered for presenters. A full programme will be released at the beginning of the 2017 summer term. Please send your abstracts and a short CV, an official contact email address, as well as any further questions to: mailto:cleaningandvalue@web.de Deadline: 30 January 2017 Organizers: Isabel Bredenbröker, Christina Hanzen, Felix Kotzur Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main Research Training Group "Value and Equivalence" Goethe-Universität| Campus Westend | IG-Farbenhaus Norbert-Wollheim-Platz 1 | Fach 50 | 60629 Frankfurt am Main | Germany http://www.value-and-equivalence.de
