CALL:
The geographical origin of the Western Asiatic population, responsible for the Hyksos rule in Egypt during the Second Intermediate Period, the process of their immigration to the Delta, their homogenous or heterogenous composition, their seizure of power and their role in history still remains an enigma, as the period is poorly represented in texts. Nevertheless the Hyksos phenomenon has, thus far, mainly been studied by text-based Egyptology, ignoring other possible sources, like archaeological remains, including architecture, burial customs, settlement patterns, not to mention biological data. In the last decades, new excavations in Egypt‘s eastern Delta have produced new information and one is now in the position in an united effort, to evaluate all this new evidence for a new overall view of the Hyksos phenomenon. Excavation reports together with finds stored in museums all over the world, create a huge resort of objects reflecting the material culture attributed to the carriers of the Hyksos rule as well as related physical remains, which can be utilized as first class historical sources. The workshop’s goal is to invite scholars, interested in this subject, to join in to help shedding new light on recent research such as archaeological analyses, cultural interference studies, new onomastic studies as well as DNA analyses and other natural scientific methods. Interexchange with other specialized scholars might lead to a closer approach of the origin of this western Asiatic population, their dialogue with the host country, the impact on the culture of Egypt and finally their heritage. The call for papers is now open. Deadline for submission is March 1, 2017. You are cordially invited to participate in this exciting international research program.
