The Egyptian Department and the Diagnostic Laboratory for Conservation and Restoration of the Musei Vaticani, in collaboration with all the team of the Vatican Coffin Project, are pleased to invite you to attend the ‘Second Vatican Coffin Conference’ (6-9 June 2017).
The themes of the conference focus on decorated wooden coffins, with no time restriction:
● Funerary practices, iconography, symbolism, ideology, technology
● Conservation
● Diagnostic and technologies applied to the study of decorated wooden coffins

The language of the conference is English. Presentations may take the form of papers or posters. Papers (maximum duration 20 minutes!) and posters must be presented in English. Presentation of a paper is subject to acceptance by the organizers. Papers that are accepted but cannot be fitted within the timetable may be presented as posters. The abstracts (around 500 words in length) must be submitted electronically in .doc format and sent to the Scientific Secretary by e-mail: coffinconference.musei@scv.va Each abstract must contain the following information: title, name, affiliation of the author, postal and e-mail address of the author. Those who wish to present posters must also send an abstract, for inclusion in the book of abstracts.
The scientific committee will be awarding one conference bursary of Euro 1.500,00. The bursary is offered for the best paper presented by a graduate student on any of the themes of the conference. Those wishing to apply for the conference bursary must indicate this on the registration form and include the curriculum vitae when they return the registration form to the Scientific Secretary (coffinconference.musei@scv.va). The winner will be announced at the closing of the Conference
The organizers will help all participants to find a suitable accommodation in the vicinity of the Vatican Museums. All other relevant information (including the registration form) can be found on the Musei Vaticani website (www.museivaticani.va) which will be updated progressively. All further communications and circulars will be sent by e-mail. Announcements will also be posted on the website.
