CALL:

The aim of this international conference is todiscuss the phenomenon of sacrificial rituals across civilizations and times.

The papers presented at the conference should attempt to grasp various aspects of sacrifice in the horizon of different kinds of human experience and ideas. The presentations should focus on – however not be limited to – sacrificial ritual in religious practice, narration and other forms of representation (inscriptions, archeological findings etc). Case studies as well as more general approaches are equally welcome.

Interdisciplinary and comparative study of sacrifice will focus on the mutual impact of different points of view: anthropological, historical, philosophical, theological and religious, archeological, linguistic, artistic and literary.

The exchange of ideas between Western and Chinese scholars is going to constitute a unique, innovative and privileged dimension of this meeting. Our goal is to stimulate dialogue on the mutual influences and inspirations in the most important human cultural activities.

As sacrifice is a universal pattern of human behavior, it seems to be an appropriate ground for comparative and/or interdisciplinary study.

Scholars of any field of study (Classicists, Egyptologists, Assyriologists, Sinologists etc.) are welcome: specialists in ancient and modern literature, history, archeology, languages, anthropology, and religious and theological studies.

We are more than pleased to announce that Prof. Fred Naiden from the University of North Carolina, who is specialist in the field of ancient Greek sacrifice, is our keynote speaker.

We expect a recognized specialist in the field of Chinese Religion to join our conference. The name is to be announced in due course.
