CALL. 30.04.2017: Clay Oil-Lamps in the Eastern Roman Empire: Production, Distribution, and Artistic
Kinneret Institute for Galilean Archaeology, of Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee, together with Samford University, Alabama, call for papers for a two-day international conference entitled, "Clay Oil-Lamps in the Eastern Roman Empire - Production, Distribution, and Artistic Design". The conference will take place on the campus of the Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee, Israel, December 13-15, 2017, during Hanukah (with a possible day for excursion), a time of light.

Scholars who are excavating and researching oil-lamp production centers, distribution, cultural connections, art depicted on oil lamps in the Eastern Roman provinces (Greece, Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, and Egypt) dated from the 1st century BCE to the Islamic conquest, and who are interested in presenting a paper and in taking part in the discussions, are kindly requested to send an abstract of 250-300 words to Dr. Mordechai Aviam (maviam53@gmail.com) or to Dr. James R. Strange jrstrang@samford.edu not later than April 30, 2017. During the conference we will try to organize a display of finds from two oil-lamp production centers that were recently excavated in Israel, and to perform a workshop on the preparation of oil-lamp stone molds and casting. We will appreciate displaying other finds from the eastern provinces if lecturers will be able to bring them along with them.
