LECTIO Round Table "Augustinian Florilegia"- 19-20-21/04/2017, Leuven (Belgium)
In the pantheon of ecclesiastical authors of Late Antiquity, Saint Augustine is the one whose oeuvre is both the richest and most varied. Very early on – just after his death – the need arose for compilations of the most remarkable or useful passages in his massive oeuvre, brought together either on the foundation of a shared theme or departing from the original works in which they were found. Augustine, along with Jerome and Gregory, is one of the few authors in this context of whom florilegia devoted to a single author’s oeuvre have been preserved. An ongoing inventory of all anthologies from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages devoted exclusively to Augustine has revealed close to a hundred extant works.
Of course, not all of these have the same scope nor the same importance; only a few have known a wide diffusion. The Excerpta of Vincent of Lérins, more importantly still the Sententia of Prosper of Aquitaine, the Excerpta of Eugippius of Castellum Lucullanum and the Augustinian florilegia on the Corpus Paulinum by the Venerable Bede and Florus of Lyon, up to the Milleloquium veritatis of Bartholomew of Urbino – the purely Augustinian florilegia have been, for a medieval audience, but equally in modern times, one of the privileged vehicles for the oeuvre of the Bishop of Hippo. We must, therefore, not underestimate the impact of what can rightly be called a ‘genre’ on the West’s (but equally the East’s) actual knowledge of the oeuvre and thought of Augustine.

The roundtable, which is organized by LECTIO (Leuven Centre for the Study of the Transmission of Text and Ideas in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance) and its Laboratory for Text Editing, will place these texts in the limelight, offering comparative studies of the principal Augustinian anthologies. Which sources did the compilers have at their disposal ? What caused them to limit their selection to Augustine’s oeuvre alone? Which doctrines did they help foster and diffuse (influenced, perhaps, deliberately or unwittingly, by their choice of source works)? What does the manuscript transmission of these compilations tell us about their impact on a medieval readership, on certain individual thinkers ? The confrontation of sources, methods and goals of the principal florilegia will permit a better understanding of the reception of Augustine throughout the Middle Ages and of how and by which means his exceptional auctoritas took shape.
Special attention will be devoted to the anthologies as texts, emphasizing the difficulties – or specificities – that their analysis presents to theeditors both of the works in question and Augustine’s oeuvre in general. What is or should be the place of florilegia in the edition of the original works of Augustine? To what extent do the florilegia themselves merit a critical edition? Which editorial problems are specific to those florilegia of which source manuscripts have been preserved? These are some of the principal questions that will be addressed in the different contributions.
