Empire in Crisis. Gothic Invasions and Roman Historiography - 03-04-05-06/05/2017, Wien (Austria)
The conference undertakes to deal with the Scythica Vindobonensia — the new fragments on Gothic incursions into Roman provinces in the Balkans in the middle of the 3rd cent. AD, coming most probably from the Scythica by Dexippus — in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and will be open to contributions from Ancient History, Classical Literature and Byzantine Studies. The central issue will be the patterns of events in the barbarian incursions (with a focus on the Danube region in the 3rd cent. AD) and the impact they had, firstly, on Roman governance and its ideological foundations; secondly, on administrative and military structures of the Empire; thirdly, on the level of interpretation and their emergence in historiographical (literary) narratives. The conference will consist of themed sessions with papers and round-table discussions.
