Greek Vases as Medium of Communication - 05-06-07/10/2017, Wien (Austria)
Every image on Greek painted vases transmits a specific content. Various thematic groups such as mythology or daily life, to mention the two most frequent subjects, can be distinguished. Whatever the themes chosen for the decoration of the vase, they were used as intermediators of tangible content, and after they left the workshop they addressed a multitude of recipients, over and above the purchaser. This symposium will address the issue of whether the vases, which represented a vital commodity not only for local trade but also for the export market, were also utilised as carriers of specific messages, that is, were deployed as a medium for communication. Vase painters played a significant role in this. The themes were indeed carefully selected. The available material allows an Athens-centrism to be identified. Chronologically and geographically, however, the Geometric workshops, the Archaic and Classical products from Corinth, Boeotia, Euboea and additional Greek regions, as well as the ceramic wares of Magna Grecia and Sicily can also be included.
