CALL:

We welcome proposals for papers of twenty minutes (to be followed by ten minutes’ discussion) and proposals for coordinated panels (comprising three, four, or exceptionally seven papers on any classical topic) for the Classical Association Conference 2018 in Leicester. Panels of four or seven papers should include a Respondent as the final speaker. In particular, we encourage submissions from graduate students and schoolteachers, as well as university lecturers, researchers, and others interested in the ancient world. Submissions may focus on the themes suggested below or on any other aspect of the Greek and Roman world and cultures related to it. Proposals are also invited for round tables, workshops, and posters.

We are especially keen to attract colleagues from the schools sector, and plan to concentrate relevant sessions on Saturday 7 April. Our engagement programme entitled ‘Artefact to Art’ (www.artefact-to-art.com) was launched in spring 2017 and will culminate during the Conference. It aims to encourage new ways of engaging with the Classical world through artefacts and physical objects, and features schools events, teaching resources, and competitions.

Suggested conference themes: Anatolia Classics in the contemporary world Classics in virtual worlds Commemoration Dress, textiles and the clothed body Elites, leaders and rulers Families and households Fragments Gender and sexuality Geographies Historiography How wars end [to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice/the beginnings of a university college in Leicester] Imperialism and colonialism Intellectual contexts from ancient Greece to the early modern world Late Antiquity Marginal groups Money North Africa Periodization Populism and politics Rhetoric and education Roman Britain Space and the cosmos Sport in antiquity Teaching the ancient world

Deadline for submission of abstracts is 11.59 p.m. BST on 31 August 2017.

Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words (not counting the speaker’s name or the title of the contribution) and should be submitted as email attachments (Word files only) to CA2018@le.ac.uk. Proposals for co-ordinated panels should include an abstract (no more than 300 words) outlining the overall theme of the panel, as well as abstracts for the individual papers within that panel. Proposers of papers, panels, round tables, or workshops that we are unable to include in the final programme may be invited to offer a poster instead.

In addition to the main programme, plenary lectures will be given by Professor John Matthews and Dr Rowan Williams. Excursions are expected to include the Richard III Centre and Leicester Cathedral.

Please note that all delegates, including those giving papers, must pay the conference fee in order to attend the conference. The CA2018 conference fee will be comparable to those of previous CA conferences (around £300, with concessions for students and the unwaged). Day rate fees will also be available as well as bursary schemes for teachers, students (both at UK and overseas institutions), and newly-graduated PG students. Details of how to apply for a bursary will be posted on the CA website in October 2017.

Initial enquiries may be made to Professor Graham Shipley and Dr Nikki Rollason at the conference e-mail address, CA2018@le.ac.uk.
