Law, Emotion, and Politics in the Nürnberg Trials: a Workshop on Prosecution Rhetoric at the Interna
Our main aim is to bring together people from different disciplines (historians, classicists, rhetoricians, legal specialists) in order to look at the introductory sections of the four prosecution speeches at the Nürnberg Trials. The workshop will examine emotional, political, and legal argumentation deployed in the introductions (in classical rhetoric known as prooimia or exordia), and the strategies that each prosecutor deploys in order to establish a relationship with their (multiple, international) audience. We plan to circulate the texts of key prosecution speeches and a short list of questions to the participants in advance in order to facilitate discussion during the workshop.
