LAC is a biennial series of conferences co-ordinated by the International Association of Landscape Archaeology (IALA) - http://iala-lac.org/ - with a succession of host-universities. The founding conference took place at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2010, and subsequent conferences have been held in Berlin (2012), Rome (2014) and Uppsala (2016). With each conference, LAC’s geographical range and interdisciplinary span expands. It now attracts participants from over 35 countries in every continent and from multiple disciplines including archaeology, anthropology, environmental sciences, geography, geology, heritage, landscape architecture, landscape history and many other landscape-focussed neighbouring disciplines.

The 5th International Landscape Archaeology Conference will take place in Newcastle and Durham from 17th – 20th September 2018 and will include over 300 participants. It is being organised jointly by the Universities of Newcastle and Durham, which have almost a century-long tradition of archaeological research and teaching; their research interests spread across the world. Their region, North East England (UK), is rich in prehistoric remains and contains the best known of the Roman imperial frontiers; it was one of the cradles of early Christianity in Britain and a birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The conference aims for as wide a temporal and spatial coverage as possible and will encourage sessions, papers and proposals from, or concerning, any part of the world, aspiring to include research on theory, method and interpretation. Sessions and presentations will extend widely across the disciplinary spectrum, from long-established approaches to studying past landscapes to the work of those within archaeological and related palaeo-geographical and historical fields who make use of landscape as a ‘usefully ambiguous concept’ to cross traditional boundaries or conventional research paradigms.

Call for Sessions

The 5th LAC Conference is now inviting proposals for sessions. The online proposals form can be found HERE. Most sessions will follow the standard format of Organiser(s)’ introduction / 15-20 minute presentations / closing discussions, although proposals for other formats (e.g. round tables of discussions or workshops) will be welcomed. The deadline for submission of session proposals is 31 October 2017. Organisers of accepted sessions will be notified in January 2018 and a conference Call for papers will be issued in February 2018. Practical Matters Registration is organised through Newcastle University. Follow this link to REGISTER. The final deadline for registration is 4 August 2018. The conference fee is £225, but a reduced fee of £195 is available for registration before 4th June 2018. The fee includes attendance, lunch and refreshments at the conference, the conference reception (17th September) and conference dinner (18th September) and an optional excursion on 19th September. Registration for IALA membership (which is open now) permits voting rights and participation in the plenary session of the first General Assembly of IALA during LAC2018. Participants at the conference must organise and pay for their own Accommodation. Newcastle has a large number of accommodation options; for convenience a list of hotels covering a range of prices can be found can be booked and paid for when registering for the conference or by clicking this link. Travel – Participants arrange their own travel to Newcastle. For the parts of the conference held in Durham, transport by coach will be provided. Newcastle is easily accessible by direct flights to Newcastle International Airport, with links to the city centre provided by the Metro (a local train service). Newcastle also benefits from direct train services from all major UK cities including London (3 hours), Edinburgh (1.5 hours) and Manchester (3 hours).
