Monuments, as recent news reminds us, are key markers of competing claims to shared memory, individual ambition, or group identity. The landscape of the ancient Mediterranean was densely covered with such social signs. The California Classical Association—Northern Section will devote its Spring conference midday on April 21, 2018 at the University of California, Berkeley, to exploring ways in which monuments interacted with the politics, arts, and daily life of people in ancient Roman, Egyptian and Greek cultural spheres. Papers (20 minutes) are invited on any aspect of this theme. Please send abstracts (500 words maximum) to jklopacz@stanford.edu by January 1, 2018. Those chosen will be notified soon thereafter.
