CALL.31.01.2018: [PANEL 6] Literary and cultural interactions in the ancient Greek novels (Panel at

The ancient novels are mosaics of connections. Far from being self-contained, they are understood better and shine brighter when seen in a network of exchanges. This panel aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion on the ‘interactions’ that made the novels. The interpretation of this word is left intentionally open in order to gather ideas on what informed the novels as well as on what they, in turn, informed. In addition to this, we see this enquiry as one encompassing both the literary and, more widely, the cultural. With regards to the former, some papers will address the complexities of the dialogues between novels as well as with past and contemporary literature, especially via intertextuality (Hilton, Bird, Jackson, Repath, D’Alconzo). At the same time, others will look outside the books and explore how the novels relate to the times, places, and cultures in which they were written (Norton-Curry, Jolowicz). It is our aim to show that a combination of these approaches best reflects the multifaceted nature of the composition and ancient reception of the novels. With a number of speakers spanning the whole genre, this panel will consolidate the fruitful presence of KYKNOS at the Celtic Conference in Classics.
