CALL:
Classics, and especially Classical Philology, are heavily concerned with manuscripts, from papyri to the later medieval traditions. Although for many Greek and Roman authors we can rely on a well-established and historically grounded ecdotic and editorial tradition, philologists and textual critics alike cannot be entirely dependent on the achievements of modern philology and dispense with manuscript evidence altogether. In fact, the need to investigate the paradosis is always present, as some reference editions may be outdated, or based on an under-representative number of testimonia, or even lacking in accuracy. Moreover, one may assume that overreliance on the current critical editions can lead to the ‘rebirth’ of a sort of vulgate text, imposing itself as ‘The Text’. Accessing and critically assessing the manuscript evidence, therefore, are necessary tasks for both the textual establishment and the interpretation of any ancient literary (and non-literary) work. Building on this assumption, the panel seeks to promote the debate on the study of manuscripts and manuscript tradition from a variety of perspectives. We invite papers on literary and para-literary texts that shall primarily focus on such topics as: (a) constitutions or ‘new’ reconstructions of stemmata (or parts thereof); (b) constitutio textus and new readings of established traditions; (c) the study of paratextual elements (such as colometric arrangement; diacritics; notae personarum, etc.); (d) the history of philological methods and traces of scholarly activity from Antiquity to Renaissance Humanism (such as scholia; glosses; interlinear and marginal variants; previously undetected ‘embedded’ conjectures and emendations); (e) overlapping and discrepancies between direct and indirect traditions of the same text; (f) old and new trends in manuscript studies (e.g. textual conservatorism vs. textual ‘interventionism’). Although the main focus of the panel will be on literary and para-literary texts, abstracts on documentary manuscripts may also be submitted. The 11th Celtic Conference in Classics will take place in St Andrews (Scotland) from 11-14 July 2018. The Conference provides panels with up to 15 hours of papers and discussion across three days. For this panel we are asking for papers of approx. 40 minutes in length, with 10 minutes for questions and discussion. Please submit titles and abstracts (as .pdf attachments) of approx. 300 words to manuscripts.ccc@gmail.com by 31st January 2018. Applicants will be notified of the panel’s decision shortly thereafter. It is expected that a number of the papers delivered at this panel will form part of a peer-reviewed edited volume. Applicants should state whether they would intend their papers to be considered for publication. The languages of the Celtic Conference in Classics are English and French.
