CALL:
This methodologically focussed workshop will explore the blurring, crossing and elision of boundaries between different media in ancient literature and culture through the theoretical framework of intermediality. Its aims are twofold:
(1) In general terms, we aim to test the concept of intermediality in specific studies of ancient texts and other media, and to reflect on and evaluate its applicability to the ancient world, the ancient medial landscape, and to ancient discourses about media and their interrelationship.
(2) More specifically, we hope to further our understanding of the mechanisms by which different ancient media create references to each other (‘systemic references’ in intermediality studies[1]). We are particularly interested in the way in which texts, always ‘inevitably a mixed constellation’,[2] create meaning through the connection between themselves and the products of another medium or medial system. In this way, we hope to describe and understand afresh the workings of phenomena such as literary inscriptions, ekphrasis, similes, music or dance in literature, or the textual evocation of sensual experience (taste, smell, touch).
