As enrollments in the humanities continue to drop and students demand ever more immersive class experiences, faculty teaching the Ancient Near East in departments from Art History to Religious Studies to Anthropology are finding themselves looking to more creative pedagogical tools and methods to improve student experience and encourage continued engagement with the study of the ancient world. These pedagogies can range from increasing use of digital tools to semester-long collaborations with faculty in other disciplines and often result in highly successful hybrid class structures. This session invites papers that detail the frameworks and considerations involved in undertaking non-traditional pedagogical approaches to the study of the Ancient Near East. Papers may address the opportunities and challenges of these approaches, the difficulties of learning and introducing new technologies or of working with colleagues outside the field, or the outcomes of experimental work done in the classroom.
