CALL:
The StAGE Committee (made up of the Universities of St Andrews, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh) is now accepting abstracts for StAGE 2018, to be held over two days at the University of Glasgow on May 3rd-4th, 2018. The conference theme, ‘Power and the People in Undemocratic Regimes’ aims to bring together postgraduate students from a wide array of subject areas in the hope of holding a far-reaching inter-disciplinary conference. With this being said, we intend to run a workshop on the benefits of inter-disciplinary research to allow participants insights into potential cross disciplinary collaboration.
By bringing together researchers from a variety of areas and combining the advantages of a number of different fields, from ancient history to sociology as well as literature and art studies, we aim to go beyond the common one-sided approaches and understand this topic in a cross-cultural, cross-historical and cross-disciplinary fashion, which will allow us to identify universal aspects of the interrelation between power and the people. This will not only deepen our knowledge of past societies but will also contribute to our understanding of central contemporary developments, such as the workings of global democratisation, the Arab Spring or the recent rise of far-right populism.
We encourage papers employing modern theories from sociology and political science, and comparative studies of different periods, however this is not a requirement. The conference theme is intentionally broad to encourage applicants from a range of subject areas. Each paper is expected to last about 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of questions in a friendly, relaxed environment. Keynote speakers will be confirmed in due course.
Those wishing to present a paper should submit an abstract no more than 250 words long, along with their affiliation to stageconference2018@outlook.com by March 17th 2018.
We hope to provide a small number of travel and accommodation bursaries to postgraduate speakers. Refreshments and lunch on both days will also be provided. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in contact with us at stageconference2018@outlook.com.
