CALL:
Cultural memory has been the subject of intensive research among historians of antiquity for a number of years. Many sites of memory and collective remembering are located within the sphere of ritual practice. Religious memory encompasses ritual performances associated with myth, acts of religious commemoration, and the inscription and performance of religious histories of various kinds.
This meeting seeks to put this body of work into a relationship with the history of women in antiquity. We ask How were women remembered and how did they remember in relation to cult? How was religious memory gendered? How did religious memory shaped expectations about women’s action, religious and otherwise, in the ancient world? We expect most papers will approach just a few of these themes and will do so through case studies.
Proposals are invited on any aspect of this subject. Each paper should be 20 minutes in length to allow time for discussion. We expect to select up to 5 speakers whose travel to Madrid and accommodation will be paid.
Proposals should be send by 1st April to vgaspari@hum.uc3m.es and should consist of an abstract of 150 words and a title. The Scientific Committee will notify applicants of its decision by 15th April.
