CALL. 13.04.2018: 15th Annual Postgraduate Forum Conference School of History, Classics and Archae
There is a sense of optimism and achievement in Newcastle this spring. Last November, Newcastle University, along with the city as a whole, commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King’s visit to accept his honorary degree. This summer, Newcastle and Gateshead will host the Great Exhibition of the North, celebrating innovation in the North of England. These are but two of a series of recent and forthcoming events which celebrate or instigate progress: hence, our theme for this year’s Newcastle Postgraduate Forum conference.

This interdisciplinary one-day conference seeks to bring together Postgraduate students studying histories and remind ourselves of what has been achieved, throughout the world, by examining historical progress. What kind of social, cultural, technological and intellectual progress has been made over the centuries? What effect does this have on the topics we choose to study? How does the hope of progress influence people, politically and personally? What type of developments do people undergo in their own lives, and how has this changed over time? What defines something as ‘progressive’, and how can we track the path to acceptance? We welcome any papers exploring progress on a societal or individual scale.
We invite proposals for twenty-minute papers from all postgraduate historians, classicists, ancient historians, and archaeologists, working on any location or time period. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
· Social, cultural and political progress
· Progressive figures
· Technological advancement
· Evolution of intellectual and philosophical theory
· Development and recording of historical events
· Progression of events within the lives of individuals
· Physical evidence of progress (e.g. material; literary; artistic; musical).
We also invite poster submissions from postgraduate students. In order to offer the opportunity to present work in the earlier stages of research, poster submissions are not necessarily required to fit with the theme of the conference.

Tea/coffee and lunch will be provided, and the conference will be followed by a reception where there will be prizes for the best paper and poster. Afterwards, there will be an optional dinner, at extra charge.
