CALL:
The goal of this project is to understand Plato’s involvement with Syracuse and Southern Italy in a multidisciplinary way – i.e. historically, philosophically, educationally, politically, etc. The project will result in a volume which combines a new translation of the Seventh Letter (and relevant excerpts from other letters) with original essays from scholars of varying disciplines.
We have already collected some suitable essays from the first three editions of our annual conference in Siracusa, Sicily. This year, we plan to add a roundtable seminar in the days before our regular conference (June 4-5, 2018), where we could discuss a draft of the new translation and proposed chapters for the book. By the end of the seminar we should have a draft table of contents and be ready to go forward developing the volume.
Scholars interested in participating in the seminar should contact Heather Reid, fontearetusa1@gmail.com, no later than May 1, 2018. If you would like to propose a paper for the volume, please provide a full-text draft in Chicago style before the deadline so we can include it in the seminar book. Copies will be provided to all participants. There will be a seminar fee of €50 to cover, printing, refreshments, and a group dinner June 4.
