The students of the PhD course in Literature, Art and History in Medieval and Modern Europe are organising their second International Graduate Conference, which will be held on 8-10 October 2018 at the Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa). This year’s conference aims to explore the concept of voice as related to literary creation, with special attention to the problematic definition of the authorial I. The voice is an archetypal element but also a powerful creative force and a (protean) means of artistic expression.

We are inviting graduate students to submit proposals which explore the plurality of its manifestations through an interdisciplinary and international perspective. Topics of interest may include:
1) Echoes: 1.1) The role of orality in literature and especially the oral transmission of texts; performance studies. 1.2) Intertextuality, literary reception and parody.
2) Variations 2.1) Variations and innovations in literary style, analysed either diachronically (in terms of literary history) or synchronically (considering them as intratextual phenomena); blending of literary genres. 2.2) Alterations of the authorial voice that may be determined by variations in the means of artistic expression; relationship between word and image or more in general between different art forms.
3) Dissonances 3.1) Pseudonyms and alter egos; poliphony and dialogue; character criticism. 3.2) Voices of Otherness: marginalised voices such as those of minority subjectivities; postcolonial and women’s writing; literary representations of queer, migrant, and non-binary subjectivities, that is, of all those identities which do not conform to socially acceptable and accepted norms or conventions.
We are honoured to announce the participation of three keynote speakers of international renown who have made important contributions to the above-mentioned areas of research and whose interests fit in with the threefold structure of our program: - Philip Hardie (Trinity College, Cambridge), a classics scholar who has written extensively on the reception of classical texts. - Paola Italia (Università di Bologna), a specialist in authorial philology, whose research has focussed on the works of Leopardi, Manzoni and Gadda. - Katharine Mitchell (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow), who has published on the female voice and dissonance in nineteenth-century Italian opera and literature.
We welcome abstracts (in Italian or English) of up to 600 words, proposing papers twenty minutes in length on the topics listed above. Proposals, together with a short biography (350 words), should be sent, in two separate files, to conaltravoce@sns.it no later than 15 July 2018 . Travel and accommodation expenses will not be covered. There will be no registration fee. Presenters will be notified of the acceptance of their proposal by 31 July 2018 . A selection of peer-reviewed contributions will be published in the conference proceedings.
