Poetic Places: material ecocriticism and classical poetry - 18-19/07/2018, Exeter (England)

The event is an opportunity to explore reading the physical world – land, place, objects, systems – into and out of classical poetry. Through informal discussion we hope to engage with the possibilities surrounding the combination of materialism and ecocriticism as ways of thinking about ancient poetry. We are also interested in considering the helpfulness (or otherwise) of the theoretical frameworks.

Thanks to the generosity of the Classical Association, we are able to offer some postgraduate bursaries to cover fees *and* accommodation costs to attend the workshop on 'Poetic Places: material ecocriticism and classical poetry'. PROGRAMA/PROGRAM/PROGRAMMA:

Much of Day 1 will take place on Quicke’s Farm, Devon, where we will have a guided walk and discussion with the farmer and a local artist, to stimulate and help conceptualise ideas of ‘real-world’ versus ‘represented’ objects, the materiality of landscapes, and land management. This will feed into a roundtable workshop on Day 2, which will encompass exploratory presentations as well as broader discussion.

Fees and Registration:

The conference will begin at 10.30am on 18th July, and finish by 5.30pm on 19th July. The cost for delegates will be £27, which will include tea and coffee, and a two-course lunch on both days. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide accommodation, though a discount is available on university rooms. (Please see website for details.) Places are very limited due to restrictions on space. Farm visit

Please note that there will be filming for an art installation that will take place during our visit to Quicke’s. The piece will be exhibited as part of the ‘Being Human’ festival in Exeter in November. Transport to and from the site will be provided. Whilst there are accessibility issues on the farm site, we would like to try to make all aspects of the event as inclusive as possible.
