Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference 2019 - 11-12-13-14/04/2019, Canterbury (England)

The Department of Classical and Archaeological Studies at the University of Kent, Canterbury, is pleased to announce TRAC 2019 will take place from Thursday 11th April until Sunday 14th April. The plenary lecture will be on the evening of the 11th, followed by two days of three conference sessions running in parallel, as well as an ‘un-conference’ session. On the Sunday 14th, delegates will have the choice of excursions to the Saxon Shore Forts of Reculver or Richborough, as well the Painted House in Dover.

Early-bird conference fees will be £45 student/unwaged and £55 waged. There are also day tickets for the Friday and Saturday priced at £25 student/unwaged and £30 waged. The registration form can be found here (prices will increase on January 14th 2019):


The registration fees include light refreshments during the day (tea, coffee, biscuits and a drink at the conference reception but no lunch).


The dinner reception is held on Saturday 13th of April. It includes a three-course hot buffet that will be held in the newly-refurbished Darwin conference suite. The TRAC party (no ticket required for this event) will follow dinner at the same venue, with music and the use of a private bar.


For each on-site visit, the coach will leave at 10 am and return to Canterbury between 1:30 and 2pm. Lunch will also be provided.

To open the conference, Dr Zena Kamash (Royal Holloway) will give the plenary lecture “Decolonising Roman Archaeology” in the Colyer/Ferguson Lecture Theatre on Thursday the 11th of April at 6:45pm, followed by a drinks reception.


In the evening on Saturday 13th, we will be hosting a dinner and the famous TRAC party at in the Darwin Conference Suite on the university campus. The dinner is available on the registration form and as always the party is free to attend, where there will be a DJ and bar facilities.


In addition to having access to a variety of sessions at the conference, you may enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Canterbury’s city centre. We have also organised field trips for Sunday the 14th of April to Richborough, Reculver and the Roman Painted House in Dover, which will be led by people who have worked and are currently working on the sites. Additionally, there is also a free pre-conference tour at 1pm on the 11th of April. Tours can be booked through the registration page. Coaches will pick up attendees on the University of Kent campus with lunch provided. Spaces are limited, so book early!​
