Broadening Horizons is a series of international conferences dedicated to students and early-stage researchers, studying the Ancient Near East from the prehistoric periods to the Islamic era. The conference intends to promote the exchange of scientific information between scholars of different disciplines, including archaeological, anthropological, historical, philological and cultural heritage studies, as well as related interdisciplinary fields.

Within the general topic “Bridging the Gap: Disciplines, Times and Spaces in Dialogue”, the conference is aims to encourage the development of a concrete dialogue between different approaches in the study of material culture, textual sources, art history, landscape archaeology, cultural heritage, and the applications of new methods and technologies as well as theories. The conference will be organized into a total of eight sessions; for each session a keynote speaker will give an introductory paper on the subject. SESSION 1. Entanglement. Material culture and written sources in dialogue. Keynote Speaker: Augusta McMahon, University of Cambridge. SESSION 2. Integrating Sciences in Historical and Archaeological Research. Keynote Speaker Caroline Waerzeggers, Leiden University. SESSION 3. Visual and textual forms of communication. Keynote Speaker: Marian Feldman, Johns Hopkins University. SESSION 4. Crossing Boundaries: Connectivity and Interaction. Keynote Speaker: Arnulf Hausleiter, German Archaeological Institute, Berlin. SESSION 5. Which Continuity? Evaluating Stability, Transformation, and Change in Transitional Periods. Keynote Speaker: Marcella Frangipane, Sapienza University of Rome SESSION 6. Landscape and Geography: Human Dynamics and Perceptions. Keynote Speaker: Manuel Molina, The Centre for Human and Social Sciences, Madrid. SESSION 7. The Future of the Past. Archaeologists and Historians in Cultural Heritage Studies. Keynote Speaker: Alessandra Peruzzetto, World Monuments Fund. SESSION 8. Produce, Consume, Repeat. History and Archaeology of Ancient Near East Economies. Keynote Speaker: TBA. Proposals for both papers and posters should be submitted via the website. The call for papers is now open and closes on October 31, 2018. Presentations offering wide-ranging and diverse perspectives on the proposed topics are particularly encouraged. The Organizing Committee will assess the abstracts received with regard to their quality and pertinence to the conference themes. Accepted speakers will be notified shortly afterwards. Participation in the conference costs €70; subscriptions may be made from December 1, 2018 until February 28, 2019. After this date the conference fee increases to €90. No payment will be accepted after June 1, 2019. Following the conference, presenters will be invited to submit their papers for review and publication in the Conference Proceedings.
