Shaping Good Faith. Modes of Communication in Ancient Diplomacy - 11-12/10/2018, Berlin (Germany)

The conference will focus on the ritual dimension of diplomatic meetings among ancient cultures of Greece, Rome and the Near East between the 6th and the 1st century BC. Particular emphasis will be laid on conceptual differences between formal regulations (wording of treaties, oath formulas, pledges) and possible underlying common ideas or shared values within the framework of diplomatic exchange.
