We are pleased to now accept submissions for the conference Myth and Rhetoric: Novel Approaches to Greek Tragedy, which will take place on 1st -2nd March 2019 at the University of Würzburg (Germany). The purpose of our conference is to gather international scholars, especially at postgraduate and early career levels, focusing on Greek Tragic poetry. We hope to provide a productive and stimulating environment for both speakers and attendees to gain feedback on their work and to develop their research networks by meeting like-minded individuals. As both our keynote speakers have shaped new approaches to Greek Tragedy in their own projects, we are looking forward to engaged and instructive discussions in an open forum.
Topic:
Our conference deals with Greek tragedy, focusing on Myth and Rhetoric. There are two main literary tools at the disposal of the tragic poet: Myth, which serves as material, and Rhetoric, by which poetry itself and characters’ speeches are shaped. The Tragic genre is inseparable from Myth, for the essential characters and plots of Tragedy are drawn from the traditional mythological repertoire. But the Myths taking place in specific Tragedies are discussed from a rhetorical perspective, which questions the protagonist’s words and deeds, influences the plot’s development and equally comments on the values of the πόλις. Myth and Rhetoric are therefore potential tools, which should guide our interpretation of Greek tragedies of the classical era.
Hence, we would like to further explore with you the interrelation and interplay between Myth and Rhetoric in Greek Tragedy, asking questions regarding the fluidity of Ancient Myth, character perspectives on Myth and truth, rhetorical aspects as well as innovations of and comments on Tragedy’s Myths within the texts.
Papers should deal with the following general topics:
- Myth
- Rhetoric
- Imagery
- Characterisation
- Pragmatics
