Linear B Beyond Bureaucracy: The Age of Heroes - 15-16-17/12/2018, Durham (England)

With the exception of a few centres and programmes, Linear B and Mycenaean Greek are studied and taught mainly as specialist palaeographical and linguistic subjects, while Mycenaean society and culture tend to be the preserve of Archaeology rather than Classics. Yet the contributions of the Linear B tablets and their contexts to our understanding of the ancient world go far beyond the bureaucratic systems of the palatial civilisations of the Late Bronze Age. This was powerfully demonstrated by the ground-breaking Companion to Linear B (2011), which showed how an understanding of the script is useful not only for the reconstruction of Mycenaean society but also for our understanding of the emerging Greek civilisation of the 10th, 9th and 8th centuries and its ties to its heroic past. Despite the excellent contributions to this volume, however, its impact has been largely confined to archaeologists and scholars and students of the script. At the same time, the last few years have seen important further developments in our understanding of the Aegean scripts, while new advances in Mycenaean archaeology have rekindled interest in artistic continuities from prehistoric to archaic Greece.
