For many communities around the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia, the late third millennium marked a new period of interconnectivity. As interregional exchange networks underwent intensification, the crystallization of new communication arteries resulted in the invention and exchange of new technologies and practices, the negotiation of new identities, and the establishment of shared ideologies. The goal of this session is to bring together specialists from different regions to investigate the social processes that resulted in establishing a landscape of interconnectivity during the late third millennium, providing the backdrop for the so-called internationalism of the early second millennium B.C.E. This session welcomes any paper whose goal is to better understand the nature of contact between communities during this period. Potential papers might: compare and contrast the power and identity negotiations employed by emergent elites; analyze the contexts and causes of technological innovation, adaptation, or rejection in the wake of increasing internationalism; examine the causal mechanisms of economic intensification; explore the changing relationship between community and landscape as a result of shifting exchange networks; or investigate the mechanisms resulting in the development of shared practices, styles, or ideologies between regions.
