CALL:

The Egyptology Unit at the American University in Cairo proposes to organize a conference on Women in Ancient Egypt. The conference will cover women from early dynastic through Coptic Period, the entire time span covered by our unit, and is scheduled to coincide with the 12th International Congress of Egyptologists to be held in Cairo Nov 3-8, 2019. We are particularly interested in tracing and discussing patterns of continuity and change, particularly in the areas of women and law, the portrayal of women in literature, and women’s cultic participation and access to power. The conference also aims at addressing more general issues in studying women, the nature of the evidence, gender bias in Egyptology/archaeology as well as specific individual women whose involvement in business or the public sphere in ancient Egypt may inform our understanding of the historical periods and cultural milieu in which they lived. In addition, there is room for addressing other topics regarding the social and cultural history of Egyptian Women. We invite lectures or poster presentation on relevant topics. Please indicate your interest in participating in this conference by sending us the title of your proposed paper/poster and an abstract of no more than *500 words* by *February 15, 2019.*
