CALL. 01.03.2019: The Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum: Pieces of the Puzzle - Washington, DC (USA)




On the wake of After Vesuvius: Treasures from the Villa dei Papiri (Getty Museum exhibition, June 26 – October 27, 2019), the American Friends of Herculaneum invite proposals for papers to be given at its sponsored panel at the annual meeting of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS) from January 2 – 5, 2020, to be held in Washington, D.C. Papers may address any aspects of the Villa dei Papiri – architecture, early excavation and modern history, recent discoveries, new technologies, site-conservation issues, furniture, wall-paintings, sculptures, texts, influences of finds on Winckelmann and later scholars.

Please send abstracts that follow the guidelines for individual abstracts (see the SCS website) by email to Ms. Nancy A. Smith, Department of Classics, New York University (nas@nyu.edu) by March 1, 2019. Ensure that the abstracts are anonymous. The organizers will review all submissions anonymously and inform submitters of their decision by the end of March 2019, with enough time that those not chosen can participate in the SCS’ individual abstract submission process.

NB: All applicants must be members of the Society for Classical Studies at the time the organizers submit the panel; i.e., soon after March 1st
