CALL.29.03.2019: Conflict (16th Annual PGF Conference) - Newcastle (England)
Every story has a conflict. Given that a narrative without any conflict is "boring", we curate our world as defined by feelings of uncertainty and continuous tension. By choosing to turn to conflict introspectively, we ask how it affects us - our relationships, our futures, and beliefs. Is conflict rooted in our desire to be valued and respected? We propose a shift in perspective, where ‘the beauty’ of conflict exists in its affordance to be a medium for communication. In our attempt to subvert negative connotations of conflict, we embrace our opponent’s reality as a way of achieving collaborative resolutions. And then we ask – how do these positive and negative notions of conflict define our research practices and the way we communicate our findings?

This interdisciplinary one-day conference seeks to bring together Postgraduate students researching History, Classics, and Archaeology and beyond. We aim to provide a platform to facilitate an open and honest dialogue which invites a ‘clash’ of perspectives in search for solutions. We invite proposals for twenty-minute papers from all postgraduate historians, classicists, ancient historians, archaeologists, and interdisciplinary researchers working on any location or time period. Suggested topics on conflict include, but are not limited to:
Methodologies
Clashes in interdisciplinary research
People and state
Cultures
Ways of knowing
Gender history
Religious conflict
Geographical conflict
Conflict of evidence
Transition from violence to peace
Time, memory and conflict
We also invite poster submissions from postgraduate students. In order to offer the opportunity to present work in the earlier stages of research, poster submissions are not necessarily required to fit with the theme of the conference.

Tea/coffee and lunch will be provided, and the conference will be followed by a reception where there will be prizes for the best paper and poster. Afterwards, there will be an optional dinner, at extra charge.
