Hellenistic Scholarship and Learning outside Alexandria - 05/04/2019, Venezia (Italy)

Ancient Literary scholarship in the Hellenistic era naturally focuses on Alexandria. Recently there have been studies that have brought other venues to the fore, such as Prof Broggiato’s works on Pergamum, the collaborative efforts of Project Theophrastus on post-Aristotelian learning, as well as the mighty Brill Companion to Ancient Scholarship. This seminar explores the activities of various centres of learning in the Greco-Roman world. It aims to elucidate the workings and practices of these venues, individuals associated with them, and to demonstrate any connections or networks between them and other places or persons. It is an opportunity to map out nodes in the Mediterranean knowledge economies across time and space, and to bring lesser known figures and locations to the fore. The seminar will be an opportunity for scholars and students to hear and learn more about the origins of the enduring disciplines that we continue to teach and research. This seminar forms part of the project ‘Intellectual Life and Learning on Rhodes’ (ILLR) under deliverable WP6.9.
