CALL:
The Postgraduate Medical Humanities Conference will return in June 2019 for its sixth consecutive year. Over the last five years, we have brought together an international community for medical humanities researchers to share their diverse research and to network with academics within and across disciplinary boundaries.
Our theme this year is ‘Embodiment, Health, and Medicine’ so we would encourage all proposals to consider bodily lived experiences, and how bodies are shaped by histories, spaces, and constructions of medical knowledge.
As in previous years, we welcome abstracts on any subject relating to health, illness, sex, and medicine from postgraduates working in the humanities, social sciences, the arts, and activism.
Proposals may fall within, but need not be limited to:
History and reception of medicine
Disability studies
Gender and sexuality
Phenomenologies of illness
Literature and medicine
Race and health
Philosophy of biology and biomedicine
Medical anthropology
Health inequalities and epistemic injustice
Trauma studies
Medicine and the law
Medicine and the body in popular culture
Pregnancy and childbirth
Medical practice and intersectionality
Globalisation and biomedical practice
Applicants are invited to submit abstracts of up to 200 words (for 20-minute previously unpublished papers), plus a short biographical note of 100 words, and 5 keywords to ExeMedHumsCon@gmail.com by Monday 1st April 2019 with 'PGMH 2019 Conference Abstract' written in the subject line of the email. We also welcome panel proposals; these should include 200-word abstracts for up to four speakers.
We hope to offer a small number of travel bursaries for this event, the details of which will be announced in due course.
