UK Ancient Historians' Annual Meeting - 11-12/05/2019, (Herts, England)

The 2019 UK Ancient Historians' Annual Meeting (the 'Norman Baynes' meeting) will be held from May 11/12 in Stevenage, Herts.

This is the prime opportunity for all ancient historians in the UK, whatever their specialism, and whether in post or retired, to meet, explore ideas, and exchange views, formally and informally. Early-career ancient historians and those recently appointed to posts are particularly encouraged to attend. The event is open both to those with university posts and to others at post-doctoral level.

2.30 – 4.30 p.m. ‘If the Greeks and Romans were so horrible, why and how should we study them?’ A panel discussion led by Mark Bradley (Nottingham), Jo Crawley Quinn (Oxford), Naoise Mac Sweeney (Leicester) and Phiroze Vasunia (UCL)

4.30 Tea

5.00 – 7.00 pm Nikolaos Papazarkadas (Oxford) ‘Lucullan festivals: athletics, federalism and coinage in a new account of the Basileia in post-Sullan Boiotia’

7.45 pm Dinner

Sunday 12 May

9.30 – 12 noon (with a break for coffee) Law and History: the uses and abuse of law as historical evidence. Paul De Plessis (Edinburgh), Georgy Kantor (Oxford), Marguerite Ronin (Oxford), and Lene Rubinstein (RHUL) will offer four short papers introducing the possibilities and problems as they see them.

12.00 – 12.30 Information exchange/business meeting.

The cost (including dinner, bed and breakfast) will be £105. The cost for non-residents (i.e. only Saturday or only Sunday) will be £25.00. Advance booking (to me) is required, but no advance payment (payments should be made on arrival).
