Women's Classical Committee UK AGM 2019: Foremothers - 10/05/2019, Cardiff (Wales)
Our theme this year is 'Foremothers'. Who are the women who have come before us? Who inspired us to come into this discipline, and who have shaped our approaches to the ancient world? What lessons can we take from them for the challenges that face us as women classicists in 2019? We have made space for plenty of discussion, including a town hall conversation about race, ethnicity and equality in UK classics.

10.00am – Welcome and WCC report – Virginia Campbell and Claire Millington, WCC UK co-chairs.
10.15am – speaker – Juliana Bastos Marques (Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro)
11.15am – break-out groups to discuss current professional issues facing women in UK classics.
Sign up during registration. Topics will include casualisation, the REF and Brexit, and we are very happy to take suggestions for other topics to include.
12.30pm – lunch.
1.30pm – Foremothers panel.
Our speakers share the stories of some of the women who have inspired them, followed by an open floor for attendees to share their experiences. Speakers: Mathura Umachandran (Oxford), Zena Kamash (RHUL), and Maria Pretzler (Swansea).
3pm – break.
3.15pm – Race, ethnicity and equality in UK Classics: where are we at and what can we do?
A town hall style debate which will include discussion of the recent Royal Historical Society report into Race, Ethnicity & Equality in history as a discipline.
4.30pm – WCC UK business meeting.
5.30pm – Foremothers: Bringing It All Back Home – Susan Deacy (Roehampton)
