The Ancient Painting Studies Interest Group (APSIG) invites submissions of preliminary abstracts for a proposed workshop session for the 2020 AIA meeting in Washington D.C. (January 2-5). This session explores the polyvalent uses, interpretations, and technologies of pigments throughout the prehistoric and ancient periods in both Old and New Worlds. The workshop seeks to better contextualize pigment use, valuation, and exchange within their relevant social, economic, and ideological systems. Painted media may include but are not limited to stone, textiles, ceramic, frescoes, and encaustic. Investigations of the pigment-bearing materials (such as the mortar) are also welcomed. Studies may range from scientific and/or visual analysis to text-based discussions of pigment use, economies, and perception.
Brief, 5-10 minute presentations will be followed by a longer workshop discussion. Due to time constraints, only one author from each paper will present, but all are welcome to participate in discussion. Depending on the number of participants, workshop presiders (Marie N. Pareja and Hilary Becker) hope to publish the final papers in a peer-reviewed volume. Please send preliminary abstracts (of up to 300 words) to ancientpainting@gmail.com by July 15, 2019. We will confirm final titles and participants by August 1, 2019.
