CALL:
The 14th International Colloquium on Late and Vulgar Latin (Latin vulgaire – latin tardif XIV) will be held at the University of Ghent, from Monday, August 31st, to Friday, September 4th, 2020. The colloquium will be organized by the Latin section and the research group ΔiaLing at the Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts and Philosophy (https://www.ugent.be/lw/en), under the auspices of the Comité international pour l'étude du latin vulgaire et tardif (www.unibg.it/lvlt). It will start with a welcome reception on Monday afternoon, August 31st at the prestigious Town Hall, in the historic centre of Ghent (https://visit.gent.be/en/see-do/ghent-town-hall). The papers will be presented in plenary and parallel sessions from Tuesday, September 1st to Friday, September 4th (closing session in the afternoon). On Wednesday afternoon, there will be an excursion starting with a guided boat tour on the beautiful canals of the city (http://www.gent-watertoerist.be/en/boat-trips-ghent/groups). Additionally, if a sufficient number of participants is interested, a longer excursion outside the city will be scheduled for Saturday, September 5th. The conference dinner will take place on Thursday evening.
The colloquium will be held in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Latin. As per tradition, it will be devoted to all linguistic aspects of late, informal, non-standard and colloquial Latin (including the transition from Latin to Romance). Papers will be limited to 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes discussion. A peer reviewed selection of papers will be published in one or two volumes (the choice of the editor is still to be made).
A workshop on the language of Latin inscriptions and curse tablets is already scheduled and, if there is sufficient interest, one or two further workshops on relevant topics can be arranged.
In memory of József Herman (1924–2005), his widow Marianne Bakró-Nagy and the Comité international pour l’étude du latin vulgaire et tardif established a prize at the previous colloquium in Budapest for the best contribution presented by a young researcher. The prize consists of a diploma and €500. As for the criteria of the award (also in French, German, Spanish and Italian), see https://www.lvlt14.ugent.be/general/herman-award/.
The deadlines regarding the colloquium are:
- for indicating interest in participation and submitting a preliminary paper title: September 30th, 2019.
- for final paper titles and abstracts (maximum 1 page including bibliography): January 13th, 2020.
A notice of acceptance or rejection of abstracts will be given by March 2nd, 2020.
A call for registration will be sent in February.
The conference fee, for participants and accompanying partners, is 110 euros (reduced fee for students, including PhD students: 90 euros) if you register before April 30th. For later registrations, the price will be 130 euros (student fee: 110 euros). This fee covers (a) participation in the conference, (b) goodie bag and book of abstracts, (c) welcome reception, (d) Wednesday excursion, (e) coffee breaks and (f) lunches. For the social dinner, there is an additional cost of 50 euro.
Information relating to payment and hotel registration will be provided in later messages and on the website of the colloquium (https://www.lvlt14.ugent.be/). Regularly updated information concerning the conference will also be available at the website (https://www.lvlt14.ugent.be/).
Please note that Ghent is a very touristic (and quite expensive) city, with the highest flow of visitors typically observed between June and October. Therefore, we strongly recommend you to reserve a room several months in advance (at least five).
