Res vera, res ficta: Fictionality in Ancient Epistolography - 16-17/12/2019, Cambridge (England)

The goal of this workshop is to explore these fictional nuances across a range of letters, including those not necessarily considered as fictional, in order to explore these layers of fictionality in more depth. Instead of considering whether letters are authentic or not, we will look at how these texts situate themselves as fiction and explore their own fictionality as letters. By doing so, we want to outline a more nuanced approach to epistolary fictionality which helps to bridge the divide between fictional and authentic letters rather than reinscribing the binary oppositions implied by these terms.
